History of the breed. Cows grazing on the Angeln Peninsula, located in the northern part of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, are distinguished by excellent health and adapt well to harsh weather conditions. The first mention of meat obtained from these animals dates back to the 16th century. Due to the high fat content in their milk, which is 5.4%, they were previously referred to as the "German dairy cow." Nowadays, this breed poses serious competition to Holsteins in European countries. There are about 20,000 individuals of the Angler breed in Germany. Exterior. The appearance of these animals is quite attractive. Representatives of the breed have a strong yet elegant frame. Their build is large and massive, with a wide chest, straight back, and medium-length limbs with well-developed joints. The neck is massive and strong. The udder has a cup-shaped form. The coat is short and has a brownish tint. The height at the withers is usually no more than 130 centimeters. The average weight of cows ranges from 500 to 580 kilograms, while bulls weigh between 850 and 1000 kilograms. Conditions of keeping. In terms of care, this type of animal does not require special conditions. It is sufficient to adhere to the basic sanitary and hygienic standards applicable to any other types of animals. Direction. The breed is dairy. Additionally, the milk of these cows contains a large amount of protein, and most males are carriers of the kappa-casein gene. This makes the milk ideal for producing high-quality cheese. The average milk yield of Angler cows is 5500 kilograms per year.

What to feed

Ration. The ration for cattle should be formulated taking into account the physiological state of the animals and the season. In the summer, the basis of the cows' ration consists of green grass growing in pastures. Additional feed includes oats, by-products of oilseed plants, and bran. The norm for green mass consumption for one individual is 15 kilograms per day. In the winter, the cows' ration changes: instead of green grass, hay, silage, sunflower cake, beets, and other root vegetables are added to the diet. It is also necessary to include bran in the ration.
